Birthday Mermaid

I painted my girlfriend's six-year-old niece as a mermaid for her birthday.
She barely acknowledged the gift because kids are ungrateful brats.

Sarah as Dagger

This is a villain from an upcoming indie superhero flick.
A friend of the actress commissioned this illustration as a birthday gift.

St. Vincent aka Annie Clark

I was sketching the upper left face and it started to remind me of St. Vincent, whose music I really dig, so I continued in that vein with a few more portraits based on photos of her.

Jadyn

I sketched this portrait in S Note on a Galaxy phone while working a PR gig for Samsung. The terrified little subject awkwardly tried to hold a smile for me, but it looked more like a grimace. And even after I told him he could relax, he kept it up, apparently uncomprehending.

Walter White

For some reason it can be hard to get a hat to sit on a head just right.

Mila Kunis

I drew this on September 21, 2011. After I turned it in, the prof discretely asked me if I had traced the photo. Definitely did not. Not sure whether to feel pleased or insulted.

More Mrs. Sonali's 2nd Graders

Sonali liked my portraits of her class so much that she hired me to come back the next year and do it again. I had to draw all of these within one school day so it was pretty intense.

Mr. Withers's 4th Graders

Once, Mr. Withers announced that Au Gratin Potatoes were one of the lunch choices for the day, and the kids flipped out because it sounded like "old rotten potatoes."

Mrs. Sonali's 2nd Graders

I was responsible for one student, and he was a bit of a hellion. Once, he tore up another child's artwork out of spite. Fortunately, the other kid did not witness this. So I redrew the picture and it was as though the destruction never occurred! Magic!

Miss Soni's 5th Graders

Miss Soni got a rabbit named Thumper for the class, and it was the worst. It roamed the classroom freely and would unexpectedly bite me or hump my leg under the table. Many of the kids hated Thumper as well. Once, he pooped and peed all over their jackets.

Finally, I conspiratorially rallied most of the kids to vote for Thumper's removal from the class, but Miss Soni vetoed the decision.

Mrs. McLean's 4th and 5th Graders

Younger kids can be more fun to draw than high schoolers because they are naturally more cartoony. These students were from Malcom Bridge E.S. and Mrs. McLean was bonkers.

Miss Park's Art Class

I drew these while I was working at Cedar Shoals High School in Athens, GA.
